The Frist Turns 25!

From the first conversations about opening an art museum in Nashville, our founders had a clear idea about what the Frist could offer: the museum would present and originate high-quality exhibitions with related educational programs and community outreach activities. Over the past twenty-five years, that mission statement has served us well.

Averaging twelve to fifteen exhibitions each year—organized by great museums around the world and our own curatorial team—we have presented more than 300 exhibitions representing various cultures and traditions ranging from the art of Tennessee to the myths of Japan. We have also highlighted the work of individual artists, who have made an incredible impact on society and our own lives. Here, we invite you to revisit or discover some of these memorable exhibitions from each year.

Our Middle Tennessee community has helped make these experiences possible, and our outreach efforts continue beyond our gallery walls through educational initiatives and community-focused programs and events.

Our vision is to inspire people through art to look at their world in new ways. We truly believe that art has the power to change lives—it helps us find solace and strength in the face of uncertainty and inspires us to discover beauty and creativity in the world around us. That was true the day we opened and will remain true for the next twenty-five years.

This year, we welcomed our five-millionth visitor. Thank you for being a part of our story and working alongside us to fulfill our mission and vision.
