Exhibition Designer (Full-time, Exempt)

Job Summary: The Exhibition Designer collaborates in exhibition development with many other members of the Design and Exhibitions Departments. Responsibilities include translating concepts into detailed 3D layout and 2D installation plan drawings, bidding fabrication of exhibition components, and supervising all phases of exhibition installation in collaboration with the Registrars and Curators.

Essential Job Functions:

The ideal candidate:
· Participates in crafting the vision of an exhibition and collaborates with the team on aligning the interpretation with the institutional mission.
· Works closely with curators, graphic designers, interpretation specialists, registrars, and preparators to bring the exhibit to life.
· Design layouts, showcase furniture, and preliminary lighting plans for exhibitions.
· Understands ADA compliance, methods of maintaining the security of the objects, maintaining exhibition flow, and the materials necessary to meet the conservation requirements of the objects.
· Prepares detailed working drawings and instructions for the production of exhibition design elements.
· Contracts with fabricators, vendors, and others involved in exhibition production and supervises the execution of contracted services.
· Collaborates on exhibition graphics with the Graphic Designer.
· Supervises gallery construction and other pre-installation site activities.
· Together with the Registrar(s) and Curator(s), supervises the installation of the exhibition artwork.
· Oversees the final lighting of the exhibition.
· Participates in departmental budgeting.
· Tracks project expenses compared to the budget.
· Works effectively with interns.
· Other responsibilities as required.


Education and Work Experience:
Preferred B.A, B.F.A., or B.S. in a field related to the museum profession, such as Industrial Design, Architecture, or Interior Design. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years of experience in museum exhibition design and production. An interest in working with new media and technology, with strong organizational skills.

Skills and Abilities:
· Proficiency in computer-aided design programs; Vectorworks is a plus.
· Experience in designing art exhibitions with both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works from a wide range of time periods.
· Experience in creating detailed drawings for production.
· Able to meet deadlines and budgets efficiently.
· Experience selecting and supervising contractors for exhibition materials, developing contracts, and managing their execution.
· Experience in safe art handling and mounting techniques and standards.
· Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
· Ability to contribute creatively in a team-oriented workplace.
· Ability to comfortably manage a broad array of projects simultaneously.
· Detail and precision oriented.

Educator for Teacher and School Programs (Full-time, Exempt)

Job Summary: The Educator for Teacher and School Programs is a confident and passionate advocate for the value of K-12 partnership programming at the museum, online, and in the community. The individual is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing all aspects of the K-12 programming and partnerships that support art education and art-integrated education, employs culturally appropriate teaching strategies, and utilizes technology as a learning tool when appropriate. The Educator for Teacher and School Programs promotes appropriate teaching and learning strategies for object-based education—on-site, on-line, and off-site—on the Frist Art Museum’s exhibition program and school curriculum standards.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to K-12 tour development, managing Museum Art Teachers, educator workshops, school partnerships and art shows. This position works closely in partnership with area school districts, administrators, and educators, and collaborates with museum colleagues across departments. The position requires an individual with experience in or knowledge of current education theory, visual art and art-integrated curriculum strategies, museum education, art history, and learning assessment practices.

Essential Job Functions:

Vision and Innovation
· Foster innovation and experimentation in developing and enhancing school and teacher programs (K-12) that actively encourage new and diverse audiences to explore and engage with art.
· Build confidence and competence in looking at, thinking, and talking about, and making art through a variety of teaching strategies and approaches.
· Connect art to everyday living and facilitate a better understanding of visual culture.
· Sensitivity to the needs, interests, and learning styles of museum audiences and of those that may feel excluded from participation.

K-12 Programming
· Collaborate with museum staff, school administrators and teachers, curriculum supervisors, and cultural and community groups to sustain teacher and school audiences over time and beyond specific exhibitions and programs, i. e. professional development programs, workshops, in-services, and specific programs developed for the school districts.
· Works to engage directly with area school districts.
· Coordinate the development, communication, and installation of school district art shows to build community connections with the museum.

Learning
· Prioritize and balance programming needs; Emphasize object-based education as a catalyst for discussion and learning about current exhibitions and visual culture.
· Supervise and share writing, design, and production responsibilities for resources in support of exhibitions and teacher and school programs, such as educator guides, school brochures, curriculum guides, multi-sensory cart materials, and exhibition tours.
· Plans, facilitates, and schedules teacher workshops, professional development workshops, and student tour-related activities.

Management
· Assist with the training of the volunteer docent program, with a focus on in-gallery and online tours for school groups and multi-sensory cart training.
· Develop and manage a program of paid Museum Art Teachers for K-12 tours; develop in-gallery and online tour content; tour evaluations.
· Work with volunteers as needed to ensure equitable and accessible programming;

Assessment and Evaluation
· Implement sound assessment practices to plan learning targets, write assessment criteria, design practical and accessible lesson plans, gather evidence, and report learning;

Administration
· Manage the annual and long-range budget and strategic planning for teacher and school programs and collaborate with the Development Department to seek foundational and grant support for these programs.
· Ensure programs are offered in a safe learning environment for participants.
· Accepts projects as assigned by supervisor.

Education: Master’s degree in education, art education, museum education, or art history, or teaching certificate preferred; Bachelor’s degree required in one of the fields.

Work Experience: Must have 2-4 years of experience in museum, school district, or classroom. Experience developing and facilitating inquiry-based tours preferred.

Community Art Teacher (CATS) (Nashville Talent Payment, the employer of record, Part-time, Non-Exempt)

Hours: 20 hours per week

Job Summary: The Community Art Teacher assists the Education and Community Engagement team in the implementation of various outreach programs to participants of all ages from pre-school to older adults (55+) and represents the Frist Art Museum to various community partner organizations. The Community Art Teacher will primarily travel offsite to lead hands-on workshops and art activities in connection with museum exhibitions and serve as an ambassador of the Frist Art Museum.

Essential Job Functions:
• Gain familiarity with upcoming exhibitions that will relate to community engagement programs.
• Assist in implementing and teaching multiple-visit lesson plans for community audiences.
• Provide instruction as a teaching artist for art activities.
• Implement the ArtTrunk, a mobile hands-on art making program, including packing, teaching, delivery, and maintaining inventory of ArtTrunks and supplies.
• Maintain community engagement storage area by ensuring that supplies are organized and well stocked.
• Collaborate with staff to develop activities which meet the diverse needs of community partner organizations.
• Collaborate to sustain inclusive engagement with multi-cultural community audiences over time and beyond specific exhibitions.
• Assist in planning, coordination, and leading community engagement activities at events such as festivals and community exhibitions (on-site and off-site).
• Attend required trainings and meetings scheduled throughout the year.
• Support staffing in ArtQuest, education, and community engagement programs as needed.
• Accept projects as assigned by supervisor.
• Ensure the safety of the public is provided for at all on-site and off-site Frist Art Museum programs and events.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, art education, or studio art preferred, or actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree.

Work Experience: Minimum three years’ experience teaching visual arts in a classroom, studio, or workshop.

Skills and Abilities:
• Deep knowledge and practice in the visual arts.
• Knowledge of the artistic process.
• Ability to adapt and present visual arts concepts to learners of various ages and experience.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
