Seattle artist Gloria DeArcangelis’ portrait and figure subjects are illuminated through a warm and powerful light, which, contrasted with a surrounding atmosphere of deep shadows, lends to them an aura of psychological intensity and genuine human presence. DeArcangelis idealizes her models, often depicting them as beautifully proportioned, with pristine skin and the focused gaze of the self-possessed. Notwithstanding their Classical evocation of gravitas and monumentality, the paintings are also loving portraits of friends of the artist, individuals whose natural poses seem perfectly at home in the contemporary world.
