Donating Appreciated Securities
Donating gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual fund assets are a great way to help the Frist Art Museum forward its mission of presenting and originating high-quality exhibitions with related educational programs and community outreach activities.
Not only will your gift make a lasting impact, but these types of transfers often do not incur capital gains on the appreciated value and may be eligible to claim the full, fair market value income tax deduction. (Always check with your adviser for specific tax advice.)
Just send the instructions below to your broker or call the Development Department a call at 615.744.4917. You may also email donate@FristArtMuseum.org with any questions.
Stock transfer instructions may be found here.
On average, stock transfers take about a week, so be sure to contact us by December 20 to realize any tax savings in the current year.
Mutual Fund Transfers: Each mutual fund has its own method of transferring fund shares. Please contact the customer service representative at your mutual fund institution for instructions.
Donating through a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)
What is a donor-advised fund?
A donor-advised fund is a type of investment account used to manage charitable donations on behalf of an individual, family, or organization. It gives donors the flexibility to recommend how much and how often money is granted to qualified charities like the Frist and receive an immediate tax benefit when they contribute cash, securities, or other financial assets to their DAF.
You can also designate the Frist Art Museum as the beneficiary of the entire account or a percentage of the fund. With this type of planned gift, you can create a family legacy of giving by naming your loved ones as your successor to continue recommending grants to charitable organizations such as the Frist. Please reach out to your fund administrator for a beneficiary form.
If you include the Frist Art Museum in your plans, please use our legal name and federal tax ID.
Legal name: Frist Art Museum
Address: 919 Broadway, Nashville, TN 37203
Federal tax ID number: 62-1731492
Please contact our Development Office at 615.744.4917 or donate@FristArtMuseum.org for more information or any questions.
Donating through your IRA
If you own an Individual Retirement Account and have not yet taken your required minimum distribution, you may be able to avoid income tax on your required withdrawal by donating your money directly to a qualified 501(c)(3) organization such as Frist Art Museum. By making charitable donations directly from an IRA rather than taking required distributions that qualify as income, you may be able to keep your annual income down and qualify for other tax deductions.
Legislation requires that IRA owners be age 70 1/2 or older in order to make a tax-free charitable contribution. Those who meet the age requirement can transfer up to $100,000 per year directly from an IRA to an eligible charity without paying income tax on the transaction. If you file a joint tax return with a spouse who also has an IRA and meets the age requirements, they can also contribute up to $100,000. This means couples can exclude up to $200,000 of their retirement savings from income tax if they donate it to a charitable organization like the Frist.
To qualify, the distribution must come directly to the museum from the IRA provider, and the museum may not provide any goods or services in exchange for the gift.
Qualified charitable contributions must be made by December 31 each year in order to be excluded from taxable income.
A sample letter to your IRA provider that may help you arrange a distribution to the museum can be found here.
