Gift Shop Artist Spotlight: Jianhui

From his first design made from broken vintage pieces found at London’s Portobello Road Market, Jianhui has been creating versatile, sustainable fashion. He has been working with recycled and upcycled materials for over two decades to create designs that are flamboyant, playful, and beautiful.

His handcrafted wearable art is loved by style icons such as Iris Apfel and celebrities like Lily Tomlin and Dame Prue Leith. His work features in prestigious art museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. New York’s Museum of Arts and Design also runs a trunk show in their store during the week of Earth Day with Jianhui’s sustainable designs, and his recycled leather collection won a sustainability award at the NY NOW show.

Jianhui

“Sustainability is not a trend, but a mission to use resources well and help make our planet greener,” says the designer. This belief is central to everything he does—for example, his recent Aqua collection was made entirely by hand from recycled plastic bottles and newspapers.

Jianhui works hard to bring his message to a wide audience. His designs and approach to sustainability is used in the Smithsonian Institution’s material for its youth education program on the climate, and he lectured at Columbia University’s Climate School during Climate Week in 2023.
