Women Beyond Borders was a grass-roots collaboration conceived in 1992 in Santa Barbara, California.

At the time of the exhibition, the project had involved 500 artists, curators, critics and sponsors in 36 countries.

Participating artists received an identical, miniature wooden box as a point of departure. The boxes were altered by the artists, who used a variety of media including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and mixed media. The resulting works employed symbolism that truly did transcend borders, exploring themes common to women around the world, including the womb and birth, death and renewal, the significance of gifts and treasures and hope for the future.
