This exhibition offered a selection of works created by Nashville youth in response to the different artistic influences seen in the exhibition Modernism & Abstraction: Treasures from the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
The abstract paintings created by preschool children relate to the simple rhythms and shapes seen in works by artists David Hockney, Stuart Davis and Frans Kline. Older children and teenagers designed the expressive masks reflecting the importance of African art’s influence on many modern artists such as Lois Mailou Jones.
All artworks in Simple Expressions are from young people who participated in the Frist Art Museum’s Community Outreach program.
