From energetic preliminary studies for paintings to highly finished works, drawings provide marvelous insight into artists’ creative processes.

Among the finest artists in western art history have been the seventeenth century masters Peter Paul Rubens, Jacob Jordaens and Anthony Van Dyck, each a master draftsman in his own right. In addition to 29 works by Rubens, 19 by Van Dyck, and 20 by Jordaens, the exhibition included a superb selection of works by artists who were influenced by these great masters, including Jan Wildens, Pieter Bout, and Adriaen van Stalbempt.

The Frist Art Museum was one of only three U.S. venues to host this collection of 100 drawings, organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

Support was provided by the Government of Flanders. Additional support has been provided by the Eugene V. and Clare E. Thaw Charitable Trust.
