The paintings in Coming Home illustrated sweeping social, artistic, and political transformations undergone during two critical decades in American history. The exhibition included approximately 70 paintings by artists ranging from the regionalist painters Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Charles Burchfield to “magic realist” Paul Cadmus and Surrealist Federico Castellon.

Coming Home was co-organized by the Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia, Athens and the Mobile Museum of Art, Mobile, Alabama.

This program was supported in part by the Georgia Council for the Arts through the appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly. The Council is a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. Mobile Museum of Art programs were made possible, in part, by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
