About the Instructor

Lakesha M. Calvin is was born and raised in Nashville and honed her skills early on in Metro Nashville Public Schools. After leaving Nashville, she earned her undergraduate degree at Washington University in St. Louis and master’s degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in painting and from Lipscomb University in education. Calvin serves as discipline coordinator and assistant professor in Fisk University’s art department and coordinates volunteer opportunities and educational experiences in the Carl Van Vechten Gallery. Her work has been shown in Nashville at the Centennial Arts Center, Fisk University’s Carl Van Vechten Gallery, the Parthenon, Tennessee State University, and Vanderbilt University’s Black Cultural Center, as well as in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. “At the center of my work are ideas of identity, memory, and belonging,” she emphasizes. “I explore color and form through landscapes of figures, layered collages and the texture of sculpture.”
