Join us for Jazz on the Move on Sunday, March 30, for a spectacular presentation by vocalist Dara Tucker exploring the life and music of Dinah Washington. This program begins at 3:00 p.m. (doors open at 2:30 p.m.).
In this installment we celebrate the life and music of the Queen of the Blues, Dinah Washington. This iconic jazz and blues singer influencer generations of singers across genres, including rock and roll. She was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.
Dara Tucker is an acclaimed vocalist and songwriter who has been referred to as “a fighter for social justice wielding music as a balm,” (Morgan Enos – Grammy.com). In addition to growing a dedicated musical fanbase, Tucker has amassed a notable following online as a respected commentator on race, cultural equity, music, and film. Her most recent album, Dara Starr Tucker, was released in 2023. Tucker has toured with her own bands and also with renowned hybrid guitarist Charlie Hunter. In 2020, she teamed up with blues & Americana artist Keb Mo’ to co-write the title track to his GRAMMY-winning Best Americana Album, Oklahoma. She has appeared on NPR’s Jazz Night in America and made her national television debut on The Tavis Smiley Show on PBS. Tucker’s 2021 album, Dreams of Waking: Music For A Better World reached #7 on the JazzWeek National Radio Charts. Her newest album is recorded by GRAMMY-winning engineer Mike Marciano and produced by Greg Bryant.
