Ages 18+ only; space is limited; all skill levels are welcome.

Join the Frist Art Museum and artist Rima Day for this workshop inspired by Journey through Japan: Myths to Manga. Explore suminagashi, a traditional Japanese marbling technique using sumi ink on a water surface, and then create your own book cover for a notebook using this Japanese bookbinding method.

About the Teaching Artist
Tennessee-based artist Rima Day uses thread, fabric, and paper to create artwork inspired by nature and the human body. She studied fashion design in Tokyo, Japan, and later in New York City, and worked as a freelance custom ballet costumer in New York City and Connecticut. She has adapted her skills and knowledge of fashion and costuming into an expressive visual-art language.

Day’s work, which she views as a form of writing with needle and thread, has been exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally. Her fabric books are in the collections of the University of Iowa, Yale University, Stanford University, Princeton University, Harvard University, and other institutions, as well as several private collections.
