NEA Grant to Support “Sanctity Pictured: The Art of the Dominican and Franciscan Orders in Renaissance Italy.”
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (December 17, 2013)—The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) announced on December 11 that the Frist Center for the Visual Arts is one of 895 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. The Frist Center is recommended for a $35,000 grant to support the exhibition Sanctity Pictured: The Art of the Dominican and Franciscan Orders in Renaissance Italy and the corresponding fully illustrated exhibition catalogue published by Philip Wilson Publishers.
Organized by Frist Center curator and Renaissance scholar Trinita Kennedy, Sanctity Pictured is the first exhibition dedicated to Italian Renaissance art in Nashville since 1934. The exhibition explores the role of the two major new religious orders in the revival of the arts in Italy during the period 1200 to 1550. On view from October 31, 2014, to January 25, 2015, the exhibition presents drawings, illuminated manuscripts, liturgical objects, paintings, prints, printed books and sculptures drawn from the collections of major American and European libraries and museums, including works of art from the Vatican Library and Vatican Museums that have never before been exhibited in the United States.

Art Works grants support the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence: public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts and enhancing the livability of communities through the arts. The NEA received 1,528 eligible Art Works applications, requesting more than $75 million in funding. Of those applications, 895 are recommended for grants for a total of $23.4 million.
