For more than forty years, Nashvillians Clara and Nelson Davenport have made frequent forays in search of the stone carvings produced by the Inuit people of northern Canada. Following traditions that are thousands of years old, contemporary Inuit carving is valued for its strong, graceful forms, the beauty of its materials, and the insight it provides concerning the spiritual relationship between humanity, animals, and the forbidding Arctic landscape.
A leading scholar of Inuit art, Ms. Jean Blodgett, formerly assistant director, Collections and Programs at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario, guest curated this exhibition.
