This exhibition included 14 extraordinary paintings by some of the most important masters of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century art. The works were produced during a pivotal period in the history of art, when avant-garde artists were creating a new language of painting that was to forever alter the meaning and role of art in society.
Beginning with the Impressionists, painters began to translate their perceptions of the natural world with increasingly pure colors and expressive forms and brushstrokes, which emphasized the artist’s vision and personal sensibility in response to such everyday subjects as landscapes, still life and portraits.
On view were significant Impressionist paintings by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Henri Fantin-Latour and Camille Pissarro, as well as major works by other seminal modern painters such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Odilon Redon and Maurice de Vlaminck.
