Transformation was a key element in many of the artworks in Extra-Ordinary: The Everyday Object in American Art, on view in the Ingram Gallery.
Inspired by the aesthetic possibilities of the ordinary object, artists have altered some aspect of an object’s form, material, scale, or setting in order to create work that challenges both the imagination and the intellect.
In the Education Gallery, visitors investigated the idea of transformation through the art of Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, who changed the form of a viola in both a sculpture and drawing. After visitors examined these works, they were invited to create a drawing in which they transform one of the objects on display in this gallery or another object from the everyday world.
