When we think of technology, we may think of computers, algorithms, or tools . . . but what if we thought of paint as a kind of technology too? In this workshop, you’ll learn about paint: What is it? How’s it made? How can it be customized to create interesting colors, textures, effects, and patterns? We may even break out some glitter. You’ll then use custom paint mixtures to create collaborative and one-of-a-kind collages inspired by the Frist’s exhibitions and the work of other contemporary artists. All skill and experience levels are welcome!
About the teaching artist
Anna Pugh is a Nashville-based visual artist working in the expanded field of painting. Exploring greater themes of material memory, sense of place, and the natural world, Pugh works with the shadows of collected objects to build abstracted compositions in dialogue with their silhouettes. Considering the material memory not just of landscapes but of paint itself is foundational to Pugh’s work. Creating custom and hand-made paint becomes a way for material and imagery to converge, allowing the visual forms to serve as vessels for memory’s residue. Pugh received her MFA in painting from Boston University and her BA in studio art with minors in art history and biology from Wake Forest University. Her work is on display as part of the Wake Forest University Collection and has been exhibited nationally, including at stART Gallery in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the Commonwealth Gallery and Stone Gallery in Boston, and Morgan Lehman Gallery in New York City.
