In this workshop, participants will draw inspiration from works in the exhibition Shimmer: Dreaming the Posthuman to create collaborative poetry through collage and found language. Participants will also learn the basics of photogrammetry to express their poems with digital 3D images. Participants will experiment with chance operations, contemporary digital arts technology, and images inspired by the natural, the personal, and the digital to create a wholly unique digital collage.
About the teaching artists
Intermedia artist and poet clay scofield creates multimedia work that threads poetic narrative, performance, and moving image. clay’s work has been featured in publications including Black Warrior Review, Number, Wussy, and Dinner Bell. They have performed and exhibited nationally and been an artist-in-residence with Cucalorus, the School of Making Thinking, and the JHU-MICA Film Centre. They hold MFAs in digital art (Indiana University, Bloomington) and poetry (the Iowa Writers’ Workshop). As associate arts editor for Brink Literary Journal and residency facilitator, they support artists thinking collaboratively beyond discipline and in community.
Chalet Comellas holds an MFA in interdisciplinary art from Florida State University (2012) and a BFA in
studio art with a concentration in painting from the University of Tampa (2001). She has a research-based art practice and has taught as an assistant professor in the Department of Art at Florida State University and as a visiting assistant professor of digital foundations in the Department of Art and Design at Austin Peay State University. Her work has been presented nationally and internationally at numerous museums, academic institutions, and galleries with works placed in public and private collections. Comellas’ work has been reviewed or featured in Art Spiel, BURNAWAY, Number Inc. Magazine, The Program, Art in America’s Art & Tech Newsletter, Chronogram, Nashville Scene, Style Weekly, The Tennessean, Orlando Sentinel, and the Tampa Bay Times. In addition to her studio practice and teaching, she is the cofounder of Unrequited Leisure, a collaborative curatorial project focused on new media art and visual culture.
Comellas views the studio as a space for structured indeterminacy, where intuitive gestures and systematic frameworks coexist to create a host of conceptual projects. Her work is interdisciplinary and at times collaborative, working across installation, sculpture, painting, video, and sound.
