Join us for a special evening exploring the food of the South with Chef Sean Brock, inspired by the exhibition Southern/Modern.

The evening will begin at the Frist Art Museum with an optional tour of Southern/Modern at 4:00 p.m. followed by a welcome cocktail and hors d’oeuvres across the street at Bar Continental at 5:00 p.m. Chef Brock will then present a talk and cooking demonstration focusing on how food creates a sense of place and helps shape Southern identity while participants taste Southern ingredients.

About Chef Sean Brock

Raised in rural Virginia, Sean Brock is a distinguished chef and restauranteur known for his involvement in the repatriation of the Southern pantry and cuisine over the past twenty years. In 2019, he laid down roots in Nashville to open four ambitious and unique food and beverage endeavors: Audrey, Bar Continental, Joyland, and June. 

Brock won the James Beard Award for Best Chef, Southeast, in 2010, and is a four-time finalist for Outstanding Chef, as well as a three-time finalist for Rising Star Chef. His first cookbook, Heritage, is a New York Times Bestseller and winner of the 2015 American Cooking James Beard Award. Brock’s second book, SOUTH, was also a New York Times Best Seller and was nominated for a James Beard Award. Brock hosted season 2 of the Emmy Award-winning television show Mind of a Chef, produced by Anthony Bourdain. In 2019, Sean was featured on the popular Netflix show, Chef’s Table.

Inspired by the Japanese “kissa” concept, which are tea lounges that gained popularity in the 1950s and eventually morphed into cocktail bars, Chef Sean Brock’s Bar Continental combines his love of music, Japanese culture, and simple, yet innovative cuisine. Located in the Grand Hyatt hotel in Downtown Nashville, Bar Continental’s bar service and dinner menu offer classic cocktails, a curated wine list, local beer on tap, and a menu of signature dishes showcasing the best seafood available.

Bar Continental has seating at two distinct bars, the Wolf Bar and the Onken Bar, in addition to the main dining room, where guests can enjoy rare records played through the highest quality audiophile equipment with friends and family. A first of its kind in the South, Bar Continental spotlights high-quality, worldly presentations with just a few ingredients, whether a bar snack or a cup of tea, celebrating the essence of each offering and the experience it provides.
