Why does this song sound so good? is a question we often ask ourselves, yet rarely have the opportunity to explore. Rarer still is the opportunity to consider what unpacking the construction of songs, particularly hip-hop, can offer us in refining our own poetic craft.
This lecture and workshop will examine the history and practice of sampling in hip-hop music and canonical poetic forms and the ways in which this technique can inform our own understanding of diction, narrative sequencing, patterning, and sourcing found materials (sonic and visual), and enable our participation in an artistic dialogue that spans geographies and time.
To wrap up, we’ll spend time reflecting on the cross-curricular conversations of the day.
